My friend has a 4000 stall in his '00 Firebird, but he has so many upgrades, I just can't tell what each one has done for it. I'm afraid putting a stall in will make the car jerk into gears. Are my fears unfounded or does it mess with the cruisability?

As for what they do. They only really help you on your launch. Its "kinda" like droping a clutch on a stick car. What a TC does is alows you car to spool the engine up to a certain rpm before the back tires start to spin. So that allows you to get higher in the rpms before you launch. For example, your car has a stock TC that stalls at about 1800 rpm. If you brake torque the car, the tires will start to spin at about 1800 rpm. If you install a 3000 rpm stall and you brake torque the car, the tires wont start spinning until about 3000 rpm. So if you can be at 3000 rpm when you launch, you get a much harder launch that results in much lower ets!

As for where to get one.... Check out Thunder Racing or any of the other site sponsers.

Putting a higher stall tc does not make your car snap or jerk into gears. It only really makes a differance on the launch. I say that your car wont be "as" street freindly, but it is. Its just a different feel then the stock converter is. You will still be able to cruise no problem with a stall installed. Just dont go over 3K stall on a car that see alot of street time and not alot of track time.

Well If I didnt have headers I would do that. Personally, Im a little afraid of TC because the last time I ran one I had trouble with it destroying my tranny.... So on a street car I tend to go a different route. Gears are a very good option too though! They will really add some performance for the dollars spent.

On my last tank of gas I got 15.75mpg and I drive pretty hard. I would think I would get 22-25mpg on the highway. At 70mph I am at 1900rpm's when I used to be at 1500rpm's with the 3.42's. I still have the factory 10 bolt rear end.

Your welcome. I understand about the gas mileage issue. I don't drive mine very often and usually just for fun so it's not a big issue for me. I will be taking a trip or two soon in the car and I can't wait to see what kind of mileage I get on the highway. I will report that as soon as I know. The 4.10's are a great performance upgrade but if you have to drive a lot of miles it probably is not the best gear to go with. Good luck.
