I believe the 1970 Olds 442 WS30 was capable of high ten's with slicks and open exhaust headers. I had one of those beasts and it was an absolute terrorizing event to stomp on the gas pedal. I think they ran about 450 RWHP at that time.

there was a one-off special model that GM built and had AJ Foyt drive on the 10-mile oval, back in ... the 70's or 80's. it ran 24 hours at over 200mph, set the closed course speed records, and was then most likely crushed. some other old codger than me may know more details ???

The Sledgehammer was a Callaway, and the AJ Foyt driven car was a quad 4 (no kidding) powered aero car(I think it was an Oldsmobile) in the mid to late 80's. And I'm not an old codger!

My best guest would be the ZL1 Camaro. I heard that with slicks and open exhaust would put into the mid to low 10's. If my memory serves me correct they made the ZL1 in 4 different years, 69', 94',00',& 02' and each of thoes year they made 69 of them. Not sure which one is the fastest. I read this in a 1998 issue of Motor Trend.

ZL1s are nice, but for the 80k they go for(at least the stage 3s are 80k) id buy a Z and mod the hell out of it.

that's a difficult question to answer.......

There ARE the race cars.......such as the funny cars.....but GM really doesn't 'build' them per se.

My first thought is the CERV III (Chevrolet Engineering Research Vehicle) (there are a total of 4 CERVs.....1,2,3,and 4.

The CERV three resides in our historic collection.

It is a dual supercharged midengined LT5 (that's the ZR1 engine) with 4 wheel steering....active handling.....and a ton of pther interesting stuff. What's more amazing is that the vehicle was built in the late 80s........

BUT........I could be wrong.

The Firebird 1, 2 and 3 all had turbine engines.....they kinda sound like a Pratt and Whitney jet engine starting.........they also reside in the GM collection...I have no idea of what their top speeds are or what the rated HP is......but they were built in the 50s...and they kinda LOOK like aircraft!
