New to the site

Hi All:
First time posting here. Really enjoy the site. Am looking for some input on next steps. So far have Magnaflow CB and FIPK. Thinking about getting headers and possibly a tune. I have heard a lot of mixed things about the Hypertech programmer - is a dyno tune the preferred option here? My Z is an a/t. with 6K miles.

What performance inprovements can I expect from a set of headers and a tune? Am also thinking about a cam, but I drive the car everday so not sure if this is a good option.

Thanks in advance for any input.

Brookman

First off, welcome to the site. headers are a great upgrade and our cars respond well to them. long tubes are the way to go in my opinion. although many of us have to worry about emmisions so in some cases thats not an option. jet hot sells a good header and they can be emmisions legal as i have. a dyno tune after headers is not that critical. id wait to do that until after some more upgrades to really get your money out of a dyno tune. ive seen them cost anywhere between $300 - $500 . A cam is also a great upgrade for the LS1. if you are looking for something on the middle side (slightly over stock) the LS1 hotcam seems to be a good one from what others on this site have quoted. Good luck and ask any questions, and we'll do the best we can to help

Welcome to the site! Please feel free to ask any questions you have. Headers are a very good upgrade, for a cam I would suggest a comp cam 216/222. Very nice cam with geat idle characteristics and great midrange and top end. A dyno tune even on a stock car can net you as much as 20 RWHP, so I wouldn't discount a dyno tune in your future plans.

Guys, thanks very much for the input. I think the next steps are headers - I guess shorty headers since I do need to wory about emissions - and a cam. Are there any drawbacks to adding a 'mid-range' cam to an everyday car? Finally, what can I expect from a set of headers and a cam in terms of HP increases?

Again Thanks,
BM

Nah, you can get a pretty good mid-range cam that doesn't effect daily-drivablilty. Headers and cam could net you, what like a good 60-70 rwhp. I have to worry about emissions too and I'm a big fan of my JBA shorties. Expensive though, I don't know what kind of price range you're lookin at.

Welcome to Z28.com, this is the best site on the internet for all things Camaro, there isn't a bloke on here that won't help you out if you need it, so welcome to the family.

Yeah, welcome to the site.

I would think with exhaust work in the near future, you might what to look into a CIA. Those can really produce some good gains for the price (maybe 10-15 hp gain for $150-$300)

First off, you don't need shorty headers to be smog legal. You don't live in California. A set of Jet Hot LT's with a catted y-pipe will get you 20-25 RWHP. A good mild cam (216/222) and a tune will net you another 40-60 RWHP. You can even get a little better gas mileage on the road due to a more stoichally effecient engine.
GET THE CAM (your not married)!!!

Definatly get the cam. There are very few down sides to doing a cam upgrade! Im with SOMSS on the on the headers. Shorties are really a waste of money for an LS1 car. At the very least go with Mac mid lengths if you cant run LT headers. Depending on the amount of gain that you want from a cam you might consider the GMPP LS1 hot cam. Thats a good middle of the road cam at a very reasonable price. You can go bigger and get more power without any real issue but you may prefer to keep a little more driveability in your car. If your wanting a good low/mid range cam look for a lower duration cam. Something under 220 degrees. More lift is always a good thing! Look for something 550-570 area and no less then 114 lsa.

U will love the headers i know i love my LT's and they are a must if ur gonna get a cam. Gotta let that car breath. I know Kody (annivesary Z) made like 80 hp or so out of a TSP 220 cam and LT headers. U wanted a nice cam but good behavior i would go with a 220 on a 114.

im not sure what part of PA you are from, but im from the york area. we have emmisions and i passed with my jet hot long tubes and the SIMS.....LT's all the way, and i agree a cam is 100% worth it, now you just have to convince the Mrs.!

Thanks again guys - really great site!! This weekend I am going to work on getting prices for the cam and LT headers. I just checked out Texas-Speed's web site.

I think by adding these mods, in addition to what I already have, I should have a Z that is really fun to drive and pretty quick to boot. I'm guestimating around 380 RWHP. Will get it dynoed once new mods are added.

Again Thanks to all.

BM

That estimate is very realistic! You should be able to see those amounts of power no problem. Good luck and keep us posted!
