New to site, rear brake question...
Hey everybody, excellent site you have here, glad one of my friends turned me on to it. Lots of good info here.
I have a question-problem I hope someone can help me out with on my 2002 SS. My parking brake actuator levers that come out of the rear backing plate make a rattling noise when driving over bumps in the road. I know it is the levers making the noise because when I pull up on the parking brake lever while driving to put tension on the levers, the rattling stops. The rubber boots are a little rotted but those are not available unless you buy the entire backing plate, which I don't want to have to do. (not sure if that would even fix the problem) Does anybody have a fix for this annoying rattle? Please help. Also, is there an adjustment for the cable? Hey Phantom, thanks for the reply, but I think you misunderstand what I'm talking about. The adjuster you speak of only adjusts the parking brake shoe itself, not the cable. I adjusted that already, but that does not give me more tension on the cable. Nothing is sticking, it just seems the cable is a little lose so the arms that the cable attatch to at the backing plate rattle around. I was thinking if I pull the cable a little tighter, that would keep the arms from rattling around. I was also thinking there was an adjustment for the cable possibly under the center console. I went looking for a Chilton or a Haynes manuel but I couldn't find one. (I live in a small town)

Check out the install shifter thread to learn how to get into the center console. I get what you mean now, yeah I think your best bet is to adjust the cable at the parking brake lever, they get loose sometimes. I don't know exactly how to do it, but that's a start for you anyway. |

You are probably on the right track thinking under the center consoul. There is a cam gear in there that holds the parking brake. You should just be able to readjust a few parts and tighten everything up. Just be carefull not to over tighten it and have your brake on all the time.

Thank you Mr bowtie, I appreciate any input. I'll let you guys know how it turns out. Unfortunately, I have to take my car to the body shop today because someone backed into me in a parking lot. (this happened a month ago, the shop is so busy I had to wait a month to take it in for repairs) Then I have a business trip to Atlanta for a week. I won't be able to get to it for another two weeks. So it will be a little while before I can let you know what fixed the problem.
