I got something clunking under my car

Just started doin it a few days ago, but if I hit the gas hard, off the start or from a roll, I get this thump from under the car and in the rear. Happens in first and from first to second. It never happens in third or fourth. I feel the thump more than I hear it. I'm taking it to the dyno for tuning tomorrow. Does anybody have an idea as to what this could be? And I probably need to get this fixed before I throw it on the dyno?

Check your tranny mount.

This may sound stupid, but where is the tranny mount? Is it at the middle of the car, or wouldn't I feel it at my butt<~~~~no lame jokes. This "thump" is coming more from the rear of the car.

I'll get under the car first thing tomorrow morning and check the tranny mount as soon as someone points me in the right direction. If it is the tranny mount, is it something that can be fixed tomorrow or am I gonna have to order a part/parts?

What about the dyno and tune? Should I put it off for yet another week?

The tranny mount is real easy to find. If you are under the car, their should be a cross member right in the middle. The mount is attachted to that, which is near the back of the tranny. It sounds to me like it when out BUT while your down there check out the bolts on your torgue arm that bolt it to the diff.

Thanks SGTBuD, I was following along pretty good until you got to torque arm and differential. :o

LOL Ok, the diff is the center of the rear axle where the driveshaft hooks up to. The torgue arm is the long peice that connects to it and runs up the middle of the car up to the transmission. Does that help?

I got under the car this morning to check things out and didn't find anything broken. At least not on visual inspection. Should I remove the transmission mount and take a closer look at it? What about the torque arm that you mentioned? What am I looking for there? The torque arm isn't broke and it's mounted pretty solid.

As mentioned before, I don't really hear the thump it's more like I feel it. If I'm stopped and give the throttle a little blip I'll feel just one thump which feels like it's coming from the rear of the car and more on the passenger side. If I'm at cruising speed and drop into a lower gear it'll thump once and sometimes twice in rapid succession. If I ease into the throttle from a stop I don't feel anything.

Tranny mount wont look broken visually. Might want to try a small jack on the tail shaft of the tranny and apply slight pressure. If it seems to go up away from the cross member it is broken. Also remember to have jack stands under the car before you crawl under for safety. Hope this helps

I've broken 2 tranny mounts in my 94...easy easy easy job to replace it. About 15 mins tops once you've done it once. What he said with the jackstands...no one gets hurt from

Maybe you got a pipe bangin....did you check the exhaust from front to back?

Yeah, I checked the exhaust and everything is clear that I can see. I'll remove the tranny mount as soon as I get rid of this pounding headache.

Thanks for the replies!
