How can you improve gas mileage?

I recently purchased a 99 TA A4 and it doesnt seem to be getting the gas mileage that other members say that they are getting. It's getting about 21-22 miles on the highway and i havent gotten a chance to check city mileage. is there anything i can do like changing any filters plugs wires or any maintainence things i could do to maby improve my mileage.

Thanks alot for any suggestions.

You can give it a tune up, have the fuel system checked out, make sure the fuel pump and all is good. Even somthing simple like the air filter can make a difference.

All of the things you mentioned will definitely help, but 21 mpg sounds pretty decent to me for our cars. I think I've gotten a best of around 26 or 27 mpg on the highway and my car is almost all stock and I've got 2.73 gears. Umm.... good tires and maintaining proper air pressure always helps..... that and keeping your foot out of it!

Yeah, well that 26 mpg was ALL highway and I had the cruise control on almost the whole time. I don't always get that good of mileage...... plus I'm sure the (numerically) lower gears also help me out some...... but again, I wouldn't be too upset getting 21 or so mpg. That's about what I average on the highway...

Proper tire inflation gents. That and conservative shifting and accellerating. Lyle recommended to me that short-shifting (skipping gears) is a great gas-saver. When I got my cam, I had 3 tanks that averaged 11mpg, I've calmed down some, last week I drove up to Santa Barbara and got an average of 24mpg. Not bad. Having a 6-speed is a great gas saver if driven correctly, but who bought one of these cars for it's efficiency?

using higher octane does improve gas mileage however (someone correct me if im wrong) i dont believe the improved gas mileage makes up for the 10 or 20 cents more per gallon you will pay

Yeah if your tires aren't properly inflated, you're robbing your gas mileage.
