The cooling fan switch needs to be changed for a lower temp also.
It dosen't matter what degree stat you run if the electric fan dosen't come on untill 210 and cuts off at 190. The only exception to this is probably when your on the interstate cruising at high speed and low RPM. The temp will probably come down in this situation but as soon as you get off or slow down in traffic it will creep back up. |

chevymania, my temp stays the same whether i'm on the interstate or in traffic. plus, the hpp3 changed fan 1 to come on at 184 and shut off at 175, and changed fan 2 to come on at 194 & shut off at 185. And thats exactly what happens, they come on at those temps, eventhough the engine is running at stock 190. So I'm assuming that the fan switch was changed when I put in the hpp3 if the fans come on at those temps.

If both of you have installed the PP3 and set the fans to come on at the lower temps then there is either inadequate water or air flow through the radiator.
It takes both the right amount of water/coolant and airflow to maintain a spesific temperature. Usually when running down the interstate or any other road that you can maintain over 45 MPH the fans shouldn't come on at all since the car moving down the road at that speed or higher should provide adequate airflow. Also test and/or replace the radiator pressure cap. The higher the system pressure the higher the boiling point will be on the coolant. |

this was the reply from hypertech
Jim Thanks for the email and your interest in Hypertech. The new GM cars and trucks don't show the exact temp, it has three positions it goes to. cold, normal and hot if it ever overheats. A 180 normally runs around 190-200 degrees except on hot days at idle and slow speed and then it will climb up to over 200+. It will do the same with a 160 installed. GM changed to this type gauge because their old style gauges were real inaccurate with a low temp stat installed. We used to get complaints on the gauges reading 120-130 degrees on the 96 and earlier models and there is no way they were running that cool. Once the stat opens the cooling system will cool the engine the best it can no matter what stat is installed. Generally a 160 runs around 180-190 except on the hot days during slow operations. Thanks Jim |

Correct. The stock gauge of my 01 ss still says 205-210. I used ATAP to find out correct reading. With Manual Fan switch it went down to 170! BUT NOT ON THE STOCK GAUGE, ONLY IN ATAP INTERFACE.
So my story for you should have you jumping off the chair, going to the local speed shop, and buying an aftermarket gauge, or just trust that the 160 is doing its job. Definately get the manual fan switch though! ~Steve~ |
