Good Question! What year is your SS? What system is in it?
I went out to my 2000 SS and do not have any sound coming off my mid speaker grilles either! I will look at the schematics on this and get back with you.

Here's the scoop. The Monsoon Stereo System (UZ7) that came with the Camaro is a 6 Speaker system, (Actually 8 because the front door speaker assy actually consist of a midrange and a tweeter but they are calling it one speaker). It has one door speaker per side and one rear midrange and subwoofer per side located in the rear hatch area.

The grilles that you see in the back seats have no speakers in it for the Camaro coupe. They do have speakers in it for the Convertables (U59) and for Pontiacs that came with the 10 speaker system (W54) and (W55). But, who's to say you couldn't add a set there yourself? I hope this helps.

I have a HTM document that supports this information. If you would like me to email it to you, let me know.

mid speakers

The monsoon system has 9 ohm speakers 6 3/4" off axis tweeter, in doors, a 6 3/4" low range sub-usually dual voice coil and 4 ohms per coil in each sail panel and a 4" mid range in the sides at the rear hatch also there is room for a component tweeter beside the mid. They are usually 4 ohm also. The front speakers are higher resistance for a more mellow output with smoother vocals. If your choice of music does not spend much time below 100 hz or on a weaker radio station you will not hear much from the factory subs. GM wanted a good system but it needed to last 3 years in the hands of the general public. If you put GOOD 6 3/4" 4 ohm speakers ( infinity, jbl. alpine R, fosgate) 150-200$pair in the doors it will step up your vocals.....

I had no idea that the backseat has no speakers...I am going to go take a look at it..And if I don`t hear anything from these speakers than, I am going to go to Chevrolet in the morning. (I have the 500w 8 speaker monsoon system)

My car has two low powered subs in the sail panal that frankly suck. they only way I ever hear anything out of the is to put my ear right next to them.

About two years ago I had to replace my door speakers . And when I took them out. There were only 2 ohm..And when I replace them with the original GM speakers . Those two were also 2 ohm..My car also as the 500watt monsoon system..I will definitely have to check out the rear speakers . Pretty sure they are working where the rear seat is .
