Skip Shift

Ok, so i read what I could about the skip shift thingy. I thought that when the skip shift light came on that the car wanted you to shift from 2nd to 4th, but after re reading i see they want you to go from 1st to 4th? I am not fully understanding why the car wants you to do that? The article said something about pulling out slowly in 1st and the cars skip shift will tell you to go from 1st to 4th. Can someone explain to me what its all about? What are they trying to prevent with this and also what is actually going on in the tranny when I obey the skip shift light or not?

its supposed to be for gas mileage i think maybe, idk its VERY annoying. u can pick up the resistor(i forget what kind u need) at radio shack cheap and do it, or if u look on ebay u can find the skip shift eliminators which are plug and play for 15-20 bucks. by far the best mod i have done so far!

Yes, it's a very annoying little device to classify the Camaro as a "low emissions" vehicle. There is a soleniod in the tranny that engages when the computer senses that there is minimal load on the engine at low rpms and blah blah blah. Putting in the !CAGS harness will allow you to shift from 1st to 2nd or 3rd even when the light is lit.

what happens when the light comes on and I shift into 2nd anyways? or is it that the light comes on then goes off and then I shift into 2nd?

the light just comes on as normal, but it does not affect the shifting with the eliminator.

yea, the skip shift was used in all chevy 6 speed transmissions to get around the gas guzzler tax. unless you have the skip shift eliminator installed its literally impossible to shift from 1st to 2nd or 3rd. i bought one but havent installed it yet, however the easiest way to get around it is just to accelerate a bit more. once you hit like 2500 rpms in 1st gear the thing turns off and you can shift normally. so like 95% of the time its not a big deal, just occasionally annoying. but with gas prices being what they are, sometimes i just let the damm thing do its job and go from 1st to 4th to save a few cents worth of gas haha.

Maybe I have the eliminater installed already, because I am never unable to shift from 1st to 2nd to 3rd. The light comes on all the time but I just shift like normal. Does this mean the guy before me installed one?

Could be, they're fairly common, most T56's have them.
