hey guys, installing a tach?

If you were going to install a really nice tach with shift light on a 98-2003 camaro, were would you do it so your not damaging the dash yet its in a readable place and looks nice. my car is a daliy drive, show car, and track and street runner so I want to keep it clean yet in a useable spot. also, how would you mount it? thanks guys for helping me with my dilima.

Cool only two holes

hope this helps, i put mine,..well right where you see it. I only had to poke two holes for the bracket against the A-pillar, and the tach itself rests on the dash. I did move the shift-lite around to the right side as it would not fit on the left. I originally intended on putting it in the center of the dash in front of the defroster, but my state (maryland) doesnt much like people having obstructed views of the road. Where I put mine is pretty much out of the way, and still allows me to see the road. Besides, I didnt reallly want to try to mount it on the softer and more pliable center dash, I was afraid of tearing it. Hope this helps and sorry about the dark picture. Only one I had.

thinking cap

Let me check on the wiring, off the top of my head sitting here at the computer, I dont remember, but I do have the directions exactly. Let me get them, give me about a day. Meanwhile, all I used was two sheet metal screws that had a good bite to em, and marked the holes with a pencil when i held the bracket up to the A pillar, drilled out tiny starter holes and inserted the screws. Now, important, ...right behind that plastic post is the metal frame, if the screw is too short it wont hold the tach in place very well, if it is exceptionally too long, well..you get the idea. Use a screw that will adequately cover the thickness of the bracket and give you enough to work with to ensure adequate retention. My screws actually slightly pierce the metal underneath, and it is noticeable (only to me really) by the plasic piece being pushed away slightly from the metal, but if you drill and are careful, using the correct size screw, you will be ok. You can try using fat short screws also. Let me get back to you on the wiring.

There is a box under the hood on the pass side, it is white in color with a metal bracket over it, it is a bi*ch to get off. Once off the wires can be spliced directly into the tach terminals of the car. Your tach should then be accurate with the internal tach on the dashboard. That was just some quick info, I will get back to you in about 24 hours.

Take care

You can check out this link on LS1.com, it is for the 98' Z28, but the wiring for the 80 pin connector as described is the same. If you have an Autometer tach, you should have the wiring diagram, if not, you can go to the other link below to their Adobe PDF. format page and print out a new diagram. Hope I helped, let me know how it goes. Take care.
Also, I stand corrected on something, the bracket around the PCM module (tach) is plastic not metal, the PCM itself is metal mounted to the inside of the fender under the hood.

(on the link above, after you get to the page, look to the left, and click on the link "installation and wiring"
