Heater core is bad, should have smelled like radiator fluid to. Did it?

Its not that bad of a smell. You smell maple syrup when it furst starts to go. Your best bet, if you are making a long trip, is to bypass the heater core.

Bassically what you are doin on a bypass is takeing the heater hose that runs to the inlet of the heater core and running it to the outlet hose from the heater core. It will fix the leak till you have time and money to fix the heater core. Otherwise you will continue to blow coolant out of the core. Problem is when the motor is pressurized you loose more coolant
(the engine is up to temperature)
