Idling issue?

Well, I'm going to try to explain this as best as I can. It started getting cold here. Well... really cold. My car does this: I turn the car on in the morning or after work, pretty much after its been sitting there for a while. It will idle high. It turns on, goes to about 2k-2.5k rpms, then goes back down to like 1.4krpm, and slowly climbs down and stops around 1k rpms. And stays there. Let the car run for like 1-2 minutes, turn the car off and turn it on, and it goes back to its regular idle of like 600-700rpms. One day I did that, I thought it would go back to normal after a few minutes. But after 20 minutes of driving(halfway to work), it's still revving up. Idling around 1.1-1.3krpms. If I pop it in neutral, it'll shoot all the way up to like 2.5k-3krpms. So i turn the car off right after it does that, turn it on, and it's back to normal. WTF could it be?

That honestly sounds like an odd issue. Has it happened again since then??? Bout the only thing I can think of is you may need to clean the throttle body (mainly where the IAC seats).

Oops. Forgot the code. Yes, there's an SES light on. I don't know what it is, but it did it like 2 times before the code came on. I'm heading to Autozone tomorrow to check what the code is. And yeah, it did it again this morning. Let it run for 2 minutes, turn off and on, and it runs fine.

Uli, don't take this the wrong way, but I sure hope my car doen't have what yours has. hopefully mine was a one time thing. I do hope you get yours figured out and fixed of course. I'll keep an eye on this thread just in case mine does this too. Good luck to both of us.

Code should be stored in history. Go to AZ and get it scanned.... it's free.

This sounds silly, and I hesitate to even say it, but I was getting the same wierd idle occurances, and it ended up being... my floor mat. the floor mat was just barely sitting on the gas peddle. Its probably not your problem, but I had all the same symptoms.

Nope, took floor mats out. In this cold weather, snow/black snow doesn't work well with beigh z28 floor mats(they came with the car).

Now here's something though, or rather another question, what should I tune/check for the car in this cold weather? When I start my car in the morning, it struggles a bit to turn on. Did an oil change, and they checked my anti-freeze, windshield fluid and all. What other things should I check so my car keeps running good.

Would you guys want a vid of what happens in the morning? It's revving higher...

I know exactly what it is Uli, because it happened to my car about two months ago! Ok, if the code comes back it's going to be something about the IAT sensor not working. What happened with mine was that the insulation apparently was pretty thin between the wires going to the IAT, and they ended up shorting out occaisonally, and finally completely. I cut away the corrugated (sp) plastic around the wiring harness, and just cutting the wires and splicing them back together, and now everything is fine. Check that, and I'm sure that's what it'll be. Interesting that someone elses is having this problem. Mine did this stuff for a while before I got it figured out, and by that time it had even started screwing with the computer to the point that the shift from 1-2 and 2-3 were so stiff I thought for sure the trans mounts were busted. Also felt horrible putting it from either park to drive, or neutral to drive. As soon as I spliced the wires and wrapped everything back up, she was fine, and still is!
