Question engine noise

Anyone can hint something toward me on this let me know.
My brothers car is running a 383. I started it earlier and i was under the hood adjusting the carb, it has some noise coming from the back of the motor. It actually sounds like something is hitting on the distributor. I turned it counter clockwise and it got louder but quiter going clockwise. could it just be timing?

You should be able to adjust timing without hearing any abnormal noises asumming there isn't a mechanical problem. What are you hearing, steel on steel? Knocking? Exhuast noise? Verify oil pressure? Try to be as specific as possible and include what type of car we're talking about here. Maybe there are others out there with the same or similar car.

Can one of the Mods put this in the right section.

Counter-clockwise is advance, turning the distributer clock-wise retards the timing. I would advise you get a timing light on it to set base timing. The timing could be getting advanced to the point where it starts detonating/pinging at idle.

What kind of distributer is on it,is it a racing one that might need to be shimmed.During assembly did it go in hard.I could also be timing, maybe your a tooth off on the distibuter.Check your firing order 18436572.Good luck.
