Atlanta Peeps Chime in!

Wife and I will be driving through Atlanta day before Thanksgiving...coming up I85 from Montgomery and heading onto I20 to Fayetteville, NC. I heard Atlanta gets wicked crowded on the freeway around rush hour.

What time periods in the mid-late afternoon are best to avoid the traffic and is there a shortcut from I85 to I20 that will save some time?

I don't really go out that way but heading outside of the perimeter, since more people live outside the perimeter and just commute, is hellish. So getting out of ATL at 4-7p is bad. Getting IN to ATL from about 7a-10p is bad too. Avoid GA400 at all costs any time near rush hour.

I try to time it so that I leave ATL to go outside the perimeter in the morning and come back in during the evening. Remember, we drive VERY fast on 85. I'd suggest 75-80mph if you want to keep your head.

Watch out for Dekalb County Police. They use Laser and Ka band, if you have a detector. A lot of our traffic lights are photo enforced, don't run them. Stop on a yellow unless you are a local and know which ones are and are not enforced. Enjoy your trip though the city. Make sure you stop by the Varsity for a heart attack on a plate! hit me up off list some time and we'll hook up. I'll likely be leaving town when you are coming in though. Sad.
