Question About Marine Bootcamp

A friend of mine shipped out to San Diego on August 4. He wasn't able to do his pull-ups so they put him in something he called 'PCP'. He is still in that and hasn't entered a platoon yet and still hasn't passed his physical stuff. His senior drill sergeant told him if he couldn't do his pullups by September 22, they were sending him home, but his mom thinks they were just pushing him or something because they haven't gotten a phonecall or any letter saying that. So I was just wondering, what exactly is PCP and can he get kicked out if he doesn't meet those physical standards?

My question is, why would the US Military send a letter home to mommy when he is an adult? And yet, the military is very physical and if he can not pass, then he won't make it. I had a friend get discharged for the same reason.

because unless you are married or whatever, you name your parents as a first contact if something were to happen to you.

Air force had a similar thing, you got "recycled" back to 0 week or whatever week they deemed fit for you. and it wasnt just physical training stuff, if you couldnt adhere to standards, you would get recycled. I almost got recycled during my 5th week due to a "disagreement" between myself and another trainee.

and also to add to that, if your family had planned to come see you upon graduation and you were recycled, it would screw all their plans up (esp if they are traveling a long distance)

Yeah it is pretty hard to actually get "kicked out" of boot camp. Especially if you want to stay and try.

Yeah, I had a buddy of mine when I went thru boot camp, he really had to try, when he did get kicked out, it took him just as long as if he'd just stayed and finished (almost 13 weeks!)

Weaksauce, they are just putting fire under his ass he will get them up. I went in doing 2 now ripping out 17. That pcp program in boot camp is no joke once he gets his pull up's up he will get with a platoon dont worry he will get there unless he like gives up or tries to kill himself.

Yes, what they say is true. PCP (Physical Conditioning Platoon) is No Joke.
It is designed for those applicants who have the Desire just not the Strength
to accomplish the rigors of Basic Training. However, Yes, you can be sent home
for not meeting the Intial Strength Test Standard. The Drill Instructors will give
him EVERY Opportunity to meet these goals BUT,.... We have a War to Fight!
If it seems to be unachieveable they will send him home. Unfortunately, I would
have to say the Recruiter did NOT do his job in preparing the "Poolee" (Applicant)
prior to shipping while in the Delayed Entry Program.
There are minimum requirements that you must pass before shipping. Which in turn
is the same test as the Initial Strength Test you take within the first week of
Basic Training. (3-Dead Hang Pullups, 45-Crunches, and a 1.5 mile run in under 18 minutes)

I've been in the U.S. Marine Corps for over 16 years and have spent over 4 years on Recruiting Duty
as an 8411.

Best of Luck to you Buddy.

Semper Fidelis!
