Springs, Struts and Shocks

Im finally back with my 5th Camaro! After a short period thinking I am a bike rider and 4 years with a 4th gen, I finally got my head on straight and purchased an 86 Z28. The car is great, T-Tops, 5 Speed and 150 horses It has a lot of miles and is in bad need of a new suspension. I ordered a set of Energy Suspension Bushings from Summit. I plan to order a set of Perfornamce Springs by Summit Brand (I believe they are made by Hotchkis, but not 100% sure). In my budget Im looking at KYB-GR2's at each corner or Monroe Sensa-Trac. Which of those two shocks would be the best with a stiffer, shorter spring, or should I try to upgrade with IROC springs by Moog?

Neither of those shocks are really made for lowered car. The KYB would be closer than the Monroes, though. I would reccomend saving and buying a better shock/strut combo. The KYBs with the Moog springs wouldn't be a bad combo, but it would be better with Bilsteins or KONIs.

I just finished installiing my Intrax springs and KYB GR2 shocks/struts into my 86 Z28....I had this setup in my 83, as well as an Eibach w/ the KYB's, and I've ran Intrax w/ the Monroes. I've also ran the Intrax with Konis.

Konis were the best, KYB's did great w/ the Eibachs, and the Monroes just plain sucked.

The GR2's will be ok with the Eibach, but any lower and it will not be as nice of a ride. I sold off my Koni's to fund some engine parts, otherwise I'd be using those.

Also, as an FYI, the Intrax springs dropped my car about 3"+, and it would be a good time to upgrade your sway bars....I myself prefer and recommend PST's G-Max and polygraphite bushings.

I just uploaded pics in my gallery of all of it today.

Good luck brotha!

Just installed the Summit Sport springs and GR-2's. $300 from Summit. It lowered the rear .5" and the front exactly 1". The stance looks awesome. The Summit springs had one extra coil on each spring compared to stock and are noticably stiffer. It rides rougher but it's a sports car not a caddy. I know the GR-2's aren't the best out there but they are much improved over the 21 year old stockers. Besides I can order 4 sets of these for the cost of one set of Koni's or Bilstein's.

Chixon.. would you recommend the Summit springs at a $100 saving over the Eibach Prokit?

Have you got a pic of your car on this setup?

This is my only experience with spring kits and for the money it is worth it. I drive my car only once or twice a week and the Summit springs are stiffer. It's not a bad ride, just stiffer. If it were my daily driver I would prefer the stock springs. The car handles better. Ive heard some springs are only for lowering with not much performance value, these springs are more in the performance category. (if that makes sense) I did take some before pics, let me take some after pics and I'll post them. Summit did tell me that they would settle more and soften up a bit after some miles.

Cool.. thanks for the info. If the pics look good I may opt to save myself some cash as my Z is purely a weekend car.

my daily driver is an eclipse, put in the gr2 and they are great the springs that i purchase tein were stiff but because of the gr2 its a great balance my little car handles like crazy now.......i strongly recommend them to the point that i would take out my bilsteins hd's and put those in with a lower spring......hd's are just way to hard and runnin 20 inches makes it uncomfortable.......i heard many people running these gr2 and all love them....unless you auto cross buy konis....then later you are going to adjust to a medium strength......which would equal a gr2............unless again you like to feel every bump on your spine...........hopes this helps
