Question Tierod Confusion

Hi All.I need some help with an inner tierod install on my 2000 SS.I have the factory repair manual and it mentions using a wrench on the flats of the tierod (mine has flats) and another on the flats of the rack assembly(Mine does NOT have flats). The picture in the manual shows the rack assembly with teeth on it which I would expect but mine is a smooth polished rod with no way to hold it with a wrench that I can see.The manual says to hold it while wrenching on the tierod end to prevent damage to the rack. Can I just reef on the tierod without holding the rack?Any advice would be appreciated.Thanks.
