Thicker Tires

If I want to put thicker tires on my '96 camaro z28 (275-315)mm, do I need to get a bigger wheel (ie. 17-18)"?

Right now I have stock 16" wheels that hold 245mm tires. I was told I can go as high as 275mm but it would be a tight fit and the tires may look like they are bulging out of the rims.

I've also heard people buying corvette wheels and then having problems fitting them on a camaro, something to do with the studs not lining up properly.

So, if I want to go with thicker tires, do I need a larger wheel, and what size should I be looking for? What other problems incur with changing the wheel size (speedometer, fitting, steering, etc.)?

I put (and ALOT of people have) corvette tires/rims on mine. Now depending on what year/type you get they fit or you will need a spacer. Let us know what type you want and someone WILL have tryed them at one time and can tell you - yes no or maybe
Mine are the 1998 C5 rims with factory tires, 17 front - 18 rear both fit with out problems...sorry had a little rubbing on the rear but was an easy fix.

They are 245/40/zr17 (F) and 275/40/zr18 (R)

Hope this helps,

Jim

PS got the whole set for 200.00 cash off craigslist....

If you are trying to put bigger tires one of the cheapest ways is to buy corvette tires. I bought the rims from someone who totalled there z06 and now have 295s on my car. The problem with the tire not fitting is easily taken care of. Send it to a tire shop and theyll machine them down for around a 100. Total cost for me only 600 dollars.

You don't need "corvette tires". The tires they put on Corvettes are normally pretty expensive.

Your stock rim won't hold that size of tire. A lot of people do put on Corvette rims, but you don't have to. There are a lot of rims made aftermarket for our cars and it is all about your choice. Depending on what you end up with, if you go to any respectable tire shop, they will be able to tell you the biggest tire you can put on. I have the stock WS6 rims on my car with 255/45/17ZR on the front, 275/45/17ZR on the back. I ended up putting BFGoodwrench G-Force Sports on my car (Z-Rated) and they ended up being $95 for each front....$110 for each back. You can go Goodyear too and end up spending $300 a tire, but I'd shop around to see what you can find.
