Lowering Springs or Shocks?

Quick question about ways to lower my car. I've heard about lowering springs and they seem pretty promising but, is there any other way to do it. I know about cutting the springs but, I definetly don't wanna go that route. I also understand that if I do get springs that I have to buy new shocks. I don't wanna sound dumb but, hey never hurts to ask.
