97 GT Mustang beat my 98 LS1 SS. HOW?

I was driving with my girl doing the speed limit (40mph) when a mid 90's mustang came flying past me. He then slowed down i guess when he looked in his rear view he seen the awesome SS ram air hood. He began to go 10 under the speed limit in the slow lane so i went in the left lane too pass. Well, as soon as i got even with him, he took off. Out of reaction and hatred of GT's, I took off to. I could only keep dead even with him, then he took a slight lead before we began to slow down at about 70mph. My girl laughed at me and said"I thought a LS1 SS could beat a GT". I was so embarrased. What the hell happened? He did have a manual and I have an automatic. Need advice on cheap mods so i can beat next mustang. Kinda nervouse to race another one, especially with my girl in the car.

I bet you feel very misappointed? 1998? manual or auto? If you have an auto, here what you do first

You've gotta give credit where credit is due. It doesn't take much to make a Pony run. Let's start with the fact that they're cheap. You can have a 10 second car for 5 or 6 grand.
I've got a buddy who's driving an 84. It has a face lift so it looks identical to a 90. The car runs 10.60 in the 1/4. It has a 302 bored .030, heads,exhaust, an automatic (C4) and spray. We had another one with over 100K on the odometerand it was an 89. It was running high twelves. Bone stock motor. Edelbrock intake(fuel injected), exhaust and 4.10 gears. Those little fu--ers are quick with very little mods.
I mean don't get me wrong ...I had a choice between a 2000 Gt and my 98 Z, I chose the Z with no regrets. But I won't take anything away from the Pony Boys. Especially when I have seen 'em whoop Vipers first hand.

Over here in Aruba lots of Mustangs beat camaros, but they are modified mustangs equiped with superchargers or NOS, racing stock camaros.
It could be worse, I've seen a Honda civic beat a Corvette, offcourse the Honda had NOS, but the guy in the corvette didn't know. Also true that mustang's parts are cheaper than your SS parts. A normal SS should beat the hell out of a Cobra, so his ride definatly wasn't stock

Get a lid, filter, Free ram air, Free EGR mod, TB bypass, WOT mod, exhaust cutout, most of these mods can be found at Install University.com

I am going to start doing those free mods this weekend (Jan 11-12). Thanks a lot. I appreciate it. I beat a 97 Mustang GT really bad today. So, maybe that other one was on spray. Does anyone know where I can find an air intake that has too huge red K+N cones side by side? Seen it on a WS-6. Thanks again everyone that replied. Next step is the Power Programmer and 160 Thermostat ( Oh , and free mods of course).

...hey...why don't you go ask the Mustang guys why they're running Powerglide transmissions. That's right good ol' chevy automatic tranny's are under some of the fastest Fords. One word on automatics, Consistency.

Listen here chatter box tough guy. I used to be a Mustang fan back before I bought my first Camaro. All I wanted in life was a Mustang GT until I drove my first Z28. Stock Mustangs sounded nice to me but just did not get that throw me in the seat effect the LS1 Z28 did. I don't even like racing but every once and awhile I get bored doing the speed limit, and I will randomly pick a victom to race. Oh ya, I bought an automatic because it was selling for $10,000 with 35,000 miles GM certified.

GUYS, GUYS, calm down. This thread was about how a mustang GT can beat an SS Camaro. We all know nobody is traveling anywhere across country to race one another. Lets all calm down. Mustangs, Trans Ams and Camaros are all AMERICAN muscle. Some, we all know, are better stock than others. I have seen so much comradery when I am driving down the high way with either the Camaro club or fellow GM muscle car owners. We all stick together in some way. It maybe just a wave out the window as you pass one another or a tag team against an import. But we are all fools in love with our cars or else we would not be here chatting about them. Just wanted to express that thought of mine. Hope it helped.

Airbourne,you just said something I have told mustang and camaro fans alike for a long time. We need to stick together because I'm sick of the little 4 banggers thinking they are fast with their huge wing. I was like everyone else, I hated stangs but in a few more years they will delete the mustang like they did with the camaro. I have to take up for all american muscle.
