Don't laugh at this "stupid? idea

I was reading some things last night on the basic things needed to get more HP in a car...one being the intake...colder air is denser and therefore can cram more air/oxygen into a chamber for a more powerful explosion..hence more HP (oh yeah , can't forget..MORE air as well as colder air)

the opinion of this one guy's material I was reading is that your not going to gain much from a cold air intake over just replacing the air filter with a free flowing filter as it does not extend much farther than the vehicles stock intake point, also that the smoother curves and "free-er" flow of the CCI's tubing and the 200 plus price tag is not going to give you more more than 1-2 horsepower over just using a better air filter...so just going with a regular stock replacement K&N filter is going to give you around the same results...I dont know..dont jump on me...lol ...just asking

also...now here goes the dumb q...If I take the stock air filter out of my car...thorughly vacuum and wipe down the air box...intake elbow..etc and attach a t shirt (air screen) ...can I briefly/safely run my car around the block to see what some good airflow feels like before I decide to sink some money into this ...

dumb idea?..smart move though in asking you guys (and gals)first!

    thanks yall!

I wouldn't take a chance on sucking a t-shirt into the intake. The stock ductwork is restrictive. CAI's ducting is smooth and even. That is a big difference. Anyone that says a CAI provides no benefit over theirs is just trying to sell their product.

lol..the t shirt piece that I cut a piece out of would be stretched taught and taped or rubber banded over the intake hole somehow..I know..I can be pretty vague...no way to suck in..just wondering if doing this will mess anything up..I know when I put a thunder air kit (360 degree open air K&N filter) on my bike I had to rejet...also cobra shotgun pipes for a better flow...

on the bike I could not just open up the intake and run it without rejetting...the air fuel mix would be way off
do our Z28's automatically calibrate the air fuel mix when I open up the intake like I am proposing?

Yes, The PCM calculates fuel for long and short term. If you increase airflow, fuel will be adjusted. Cooler incoming air is denser and better for combustion.

I know I have a lot to learn...I'm trying..lol thanks for the reply!!!

I know the t-shirt thing sounds like a cheap way to get around buying a filter... I would not try that.

However, I do know that (since you bring up motorcycle engines) there are quite a few guys running cycle engines on clay track micro-sprint cars with a "pre-filter" over their air filter. And this is essentially an old cotton t-shirt duct-taped over the K&N filter over their carbs.

But there is one major difference between your '95 and the sprints... they are running an open filter than can get directly impacted by chuncks of clay and clay dust... they are protecting that filter as an investment. Your filter is tucked away under the hood where this cannot happen.

On your cycle I would say yes, lots of guys do it... on your car, I would ask "WHY?"

And if you run something like that without a K&N (or other) filter before the t-shirt, you would end up with a t-shirt (regardless of how you fixed it) stuck in your MAF screen at the least screwing that MAF up... if you have descreened your MAF... you would end up with shredded t-shirt in your engine and you would end up needing a valve job!

I was just gonna run the t shirt "set up" temporarily for a few minutes around the block..probably less than a mile to see what impact a opened up intake would have..if it was good...I'd order a CCI and filter online..just wanted to see what I want to buy first...

even though it's a short jaunt around the block, then I'd undo it..I dont want to get any foreign material in the engine

I did find some screen in my shop...real tight mesh like a faucet's filter..i may use that..heck I may not even do it..I am leaning towards just ordering either a Corsa or a Borla catback this weekend..that mod may be fun..sound good anyway

I know when I did the intake and exhaust, rejet, clutch springs on my bike the torque jumped up, but it wasnt anything drastic at all and I sunk about 750.00-1000 on everything..the cool effect was better than any performance gain

an air filter alone will give you more horsepower but the air ducting is also a big restriction. I have the moroso cai and it was worth every penny TRUST ME go with a cai kit like moroso or k&n you'll definately feel a difference

the t shirt would never make it as far as the tb ,it would most likly get caught in the duct and choke the car off .also its not SMART but you could get away with running without a filter for quite awhile although your engine would hate you for it

I was out muddin in my truck went through a creek and soaked my air filter. I took the filter out and used one of my girlfriends nylons. It worked long enough to get me to walmart to get another filter.

Just by a moroso CAI or make one your self. There are more than a few guys on here who have made a cai for around $60. Do a search.

Pantyhose would work better than the tee-shirt.

if your just going around the block, a screen or mesh will work just fine to keep any big obstruction that may get thrown into the engine while filter is off.... to be honest with you I wouldnt worry about it at all just pull the filter out and go for it, make sure air box is wiped out though lol...

Just my opionion... get the borla exhaust if you're still tryin to decide. One of my friends owns a muffler shop and he said corsa uses the thinest and cheapest materials to construct their catbacks. He said his favorite installs on f-bodys are the borla and magnaflows. Plus, corsa is the most expensive of them all i believe.
